Avocado became a Certified B Corp in 2020. This year, we’re proud and humbled to be recognized as one of B Corp’s “Best For the World” companies in the Community category.

In addition to becoming a Certified B Corp with a high assessment score of 126.2 points, Avocado is proud to be named a 2022 B Corp “Best For the World™” company, joining the ranks of brands like Patagonia Works, TOMS, Uncommon Goods, and Aspiration that have earned the award in the past. The distinction acknowledges that out of 5,000 Certified B Corporations worldwide, we’re among the top five percent of all B Corp companies in the Community impact category

The B Corp Community impact area evaluates whether a company’s business model is designed to address specific community-oriented problems like poverty alleviation through fair trade sourcing or distribution via microenterprises, producer cooperative models, locally-focused economic development, and formal charitable giving commitments.

“Giving back to our community is fundamental to Avocado. We’re proud that B Corp recognized our business as one of the ‘Best For the World,’ but we also recognize that our work has just begun.”

We scored well in Community because of our commitment to 1% For the Planet and our transformative mattress donation program. According to B Corp, our company is a top performer in contributing to the economic and social well-being of the communities in which we operate. Through our exemplary practices and policies directed at community impact, we’re building shared, sustainable prosperity for all.

“Giving back to our community is fundamental to Avocado,” says Avocado Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer Mark Abrials. “We’re proud that B Corp recognized our business as one of the ‘Best For the World,’ but we also recognize that our work has just begun.”

As a member of 1% For the Planet, we’ve donated millions of dollars to more than 40 nonprofits — from Brave Trails, Leave No Trace, Trees, Water & People to Plastic Oceans International to Outdoor Afro, National Young Farmers Coalition, and City Harvest. This year, we’re leveraging our partnership to support Re:Wild, a nonprofit that protects and restores the diversity of life on Earth.

“Avocado drives real, positive change by committing 1% of annual sales, forging powerful partnerships and amplifying those stories,” says Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “We’re grateful for Avocado’s leadership in growing the dynamic momentum that will propel our movement forward with an even greater collective impact.”

In addition to our commitment to 1% For the Planet, we also donate more than 90 percent of our mattress returns and 100 percent of our pillow and mattress topper and protector returns to our nationwide network of more than 1,000 nonprofit partners — including local women’s shelters, rehabilitation centers, refugee centers, and centers for those with disabilities.

“Avocado drives real, positive change by committing 1% of annual sales, forging powerful partnerships and amplifying those stories. We’re grateful for Avocado’s leadership in growing the dynamic momentum that will propel our movement forward with an even greater collective impact.”

Certified B Corps are the gold standard for responsible businesses and legally commit to considering the impacts of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Members like Avocado are part of a community of leaders igniting a global, cultural shift in the way companies operate, recognizing that a sustainable and inclusive economy means balancing profit with purpose.

But passing the rigorous B Impact Assessment to qualify as a Certified B Corporation is itself not easy. Most companies don’t pass. In fact, only 5,000 companies in the world, across 70 countries and 150 industries, are Certified B Corps. A typical company would only score about 50 points on the assessment.

That’s why we’re incredibly humbled to be named one of B Corp’s Best For the World companies. But we know we still have work to do. We’re due to take the B Impact Assessment again in 2023, and our goal is to raise our scores across all the categories, particularly the ones where we have the most room for improvement.
