Using AI Well: A Parent’s Guide
How to use AI as a support tool, without outsourcing your instincts.
“I was talking to Gem the other day and she…” a friend said in a voice note (the preferred mode of communication for millennial moms) and I racked my sleep-deprived brain, trying to figure out which mutual acquaintance she meant. Then, it clicked. “Gem” was Gemini.
In 2025, up to 34 percent of parents in the U.S. reported using AI for childcare planning and logistics, a sign that what not so long ago still felt very under the radar, is increasingly accepted as a part of everyday parenting. One minute, a fellow mom is stage-whispering at the park that she used it to meal plan; the next, it’s everywhere, from the group chat to Dr. Becky’s new AI parenting chatbot, GiGi. At this point, brands are fully on board (looking at you, Welch’s lunchbox note generator), alongside a steady stream of headlines warning that AI is “coming for” parenting as we know it.
For many parents, turning to AI now feels practical, especially for the kind of household admin that falls under the category of “mental load,” still disproportionately carried by mothers. And who could blame you for being curious? Anything that promises to make parenting a little easier has obvious appeal. I’m writing this while my toddler gives me a full checkup with her toy medical kit, which feels… relevant.
Whether or not you choose to use it at home, AI is rapidly becoming part of the everyday, and is something we’ll likely need to help our kids navigate, too. Here’s a primer on what parents are actually using AI for, where it can lighten mental load, and what to watch for if you decide to dip a toe in.
How parents are actually using AI.
A recent paper on AI-assisted parenting, published in the journal Child Development Perspectives, notes that parents tend to use AI in a few repeatable categories, rather than one-off questions: information seeking (development, behavior, health), routines and logistics (schedules, meal plans, organization), parenting guidance (what to say, how to respond), and activities or learning support.
In other words, when parents turn to AI, they’re not asking abstract questions — they’re asking the same things they’ve always asked friends, family, or the internet: Is this sleep schedule normal? What do these pediatrician notes mean? Where do I even start with this birthday party? What do I make for dinner? What are some rainy-day activities for this age? How do I handle this behavior?
The questions themselves aren’t new. What’s changed is how the answers come back: instantly (even at 2am), neatly packaged, and judgment-free.
That last part feels important. Parenting, mothering in particular, already comes with a steady undercurrent of expectation, to be informed, be patient, be on top of everything — and with AI, there’s no need to justify the question. It’s just an answer. As Jenny Taitz, a clinical psychologist and author who focuses on stress and coping, puts it: “There’s real value in getting a starting point. When you’re depleted, initiation is often the hardest part.”
But as AI continues to advance and parents become more fluent in it, its role is expanding. What starts as a quick question can turn into more involved support — mapping out a move, planning for postpartum, or coordinating an entire summer’s worth of logistics. Some tools are built specifically for that kind of heavy lifting: subscription-based AI household assistants like Ohai are designed to manage logistics, which is very different from the quick, ad hoc conversations you might have with a chatbot.
That ease and efficiency is part of AI’s appeal — but it’s also where things can get tricky.

What to watch out for.
AI has a habit of “hallucinating,” generating entirely plausible but false information, and sounding confident while it does it. Really confident. The more you rely on it, the easier it can be to take those answers at face value, which may start to nudge you away from your own instincts. Over time, that can look like leaning on it a little too heavily, or second-guessing yourself more than you otherwise would. (Some parents try to get around this by training custom chatbots to “think” more like them.)
This matters most in higher-stakes areas like health and development. The paper on AI-assisted parenting points out that parents are increasingly asking chatbots like ChatGPT about pediatric and developmental questions, and while they can provide a helpful overview or some sense of reassurance, they often miss nuance, sometimes cite the wrong sources, and rarely give concrete next steps. That instant relief is tempting, but leaning too heavily on AI for medical advice can mean missing key early intervention windows, which could have long-term impacts.
Experts stress using AI as a tool, not an authority. “Treat AI as a brainstorming partner, not an expert,” says Nicholas C. Jacobson, PhD, a computational psychologist and associate professor at Dartmouth College. “Use it for ideas, but ensure that you don’t over-rely on it for medical or mental health topics. Always filter what it says through your own common sense and what you know about your child — you’re the real expert.” He adds, “General-purpose models aren’t trained on validated parenting science. Their advice can be generic, wrong, or reflect the biases in their training data — that is, the open internet. The AI doesn’t know your child, your family, or the situation. It can’t replicate the clinical judgment of a doctor or the deep, intuitive knowledge a parent has.”
There’s also risk around what happens when AI starts to fill in for the relational parts of parenting, as early caregiving interactions are irreplaceable for secure attachment and social learning.
The throughline, for now, seems to be balance. AI can support your mental load, but it works best when it stays in that role — supporting, not substituting.

Setting boundaries around AI in your home.
Used in a way that still leaves room for your own judgment, your own instincts, and the imperfect, very human moments that actually shape parenting, AI can give parents a bit of breathing room. But without some guardrails, it can also add noise — more inputs, more second-guessing, and more stepping back from your own instincts.
Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you use it intentionally:
Information Overload
Instant answers are appealing, but more input doesn’t always mean more clarity. Most parents are already navigating a steady stream of advice, and AI can easily add to the noise. Instead of simplifying decisions, it can lead to more second-guessing. Setting some personal boundaries around when, and how often, you turn to it can help keep it from becoming just another source of mental clutter.
Privacy & Data Privacy protections around AI are still evolving, and in many cases, what you input — health histories, conversations, day-to-day personal details — are being stored and used to improve systems. Right now, much of the ecosystem is still the wild west: policies vary, defaults often favor data collection, and clarity about how AI uses your inputs can be limited. Being intentional about what you share is the best defense until more robust standards catch up.
Family Literacy
Another thing to add to the mental load: kids are watching. How you use AI shapes how they’ll approach it. The same strategies you’ve used for phones and social media still apply: learn the technology, talk about it openly, and explore it together when it makes sense. Model what you want them to take away: that AI is a starting point, not a final answer. Encourage questioning, double-checking, and thinking critically about what it produces. These conversations don’t have to wait; most kids are exposed earlier than you think.
