Sweet pineapple, floral passionflower and fresh mint combine to create this simple mocktail designed to help you have a more restful nights sleep.
Welcome to our Bedtime Mocktail Series. We’ve partnered with mixologist and mocktail recipe creator, Natalie Battaglia, to bring you simple and nourishing non-alcoholic recipes that will help you sleep better.
You might know pineapple as a summer fruit that is rich in vitamin C and manganese, but it is so much more than that. Some studies have shown it actually has the potential to increase the concentration of melatonin in your blood, an essential hormone your brain produces in response to darkness. Melatonin sends signals to your body that it’s time for sleep.
Pineapple is not the only powerhouse ingredient in this recipe. We also use passionflower tea, which is known to increase gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is a naturally-occurring amino acid that reduces activity in the central nervous system, which may result in relaxation and a better nights sleep.

In even better news, juicy pineapple pairs perfectly with the delicate, earthy flavor of passionflower tea, resulting in a beautiful balance of sweet, tangy and minty.
Prefer it a little sweeter? The maple syrup is an optional ingredient and is especially useful if your pineapple isn’t very sweet. Feel free to replace this with your choice of sweetener if you wish.
We hope you enjoy this recipe!

Ingredients
- ½ cup fresh chopped pineapple
- 1 oz (30 ml) lemon juice
- 8-10 mint leaves
- 4 oz (120 ml) chilled passionflower tea
- ½ oz (15 ml) maple syrup (optional)
- Extra pineapple, mint, lemon and/or edible flowers to garnish (optional)
Method
- Brew the tea according to packet instructions, then set aside to chill.
- Place the chopped pineapple in a shaker and muddle well until the juices are released. Add the lemon juice.
- Clap the mint together in your hands a few times and add to your shaker. Press down on the mint gently with your muddler a couple of times.
- Add the passionflower tea and some ice, then replace the lid and shake well until combined.
- Then to serve, you have two choices.
- Either ‘dirty pour’ (which means to pour without straining) the whole lot into a glass filled with ice. This way you get all the benefits of the pineapple with no wastage.
- The other option is to strain over ice into a short tumbler. This is better for those that prefer a smoother drink without any fruity chunks.
- Garnish with your choice of fresh pineapple, mint, edible flowers and/or lemon.
