Enjoy all the best parts of movie-going without leaving the comfort of your couch. Here’s how to create a cozy movie night at home.

For me, the movies come with a decent measure of nostalgia. As a kid, going with my family was a special treat. As a teenager, hitting the theater with friends was a rite of passage and a first taste of independence. Now, I’m still down for the occasional movie night, but I could do without the uncomfortable seats, noisy crowds, and overpriced popcorn. My friends agree.

A movie night at home is much more appealing — and is easily one of my favorite weekend activities. The upsides are abundant. The film selection isn’t confined to the marquee’s list (between even just two pals, we typically have access to all streaming services), we’ll never suffer in a theater so cold we’re shivering, if there’s commentary, it’s among friends and not the annoying guy on the back row, and pajamas aren’t just allowed, they’re encouraged. And the snack selection? It includes whatever your heart — and your taste buds — desire.

Of course, to set movie night apart from another night on your couch requires attention to detail and thoughtful elements. Here are our go-to tips for creating a cozy movie night at home with friends and family.

Create a Theme

Whether it’s focused on an upcoming holiday, a season of the year, or a genre, having a central theme will make planning easier and up the fun factor. Pick up a few inexpensive decorations, create an online invite using Paperless Post or Evite, and choose films that go with the chosen theme. You can even go all in and curate snacks that fit the concept. For example, pumpkin cookies in the fall or these healthy carrot cake versions in the spring.

Curate a Homey Ambiance

The perfect ambiance doesn’t just happen, it has to be created. For a movie night, that means dim lights, scented candles, and all the pillows. Bring down every throw pillow in the house and prop them up for your guests to use. Blankets are also a must. For the ultimate cozy vibe and homey atmosphere, you can’t go wrong with a chunky-weighted blanket — ideal for wrapping up in and for a little extra comfort during jump scare scenes. Oh, and don’t forget to let everyone know they’re welcome to show up in their comfiest clothes.

Set Up Seating

The right seating makes all the difference, especially since you’ll be sitting for an hour and a half or more. The couch is a given, but if you’re having more than a couple of people over, you’ll need options. Layer in a bean bag chair, plush floor pillows, or even an ultra-thick duvet around the room so people can lounge without compromising comfort.

Movie Selection

Choosing a movie everyone will enjoy is a lot of pressure. Instead of leaving it to one person, or endless back and forth between friends, get everyone to send in two to three films they’d like to watch. Write them all down on scraps of paper and have someone pull one out of a hat after everyone arrives. If you’re sticking to a theme, make sure everyone knows to keep their selections aligned.

Offer a Snack Bar

Movies are always better with buttery popcorn and snacks. To ensure your at-home popcorn rivals theater-style, follow this easy recipe to add butter without making the whole bowl soggy, and stock up on unique popcorn seasonings like sour cream and onion, kettle corn, ranch, and popcorn salt. For a healthier option, try Lesser Evil popcorn that’s lightly seasoned with Himalayan sea salt. Of course, you can’t leave out candy. Find out what your guests’ favorite is and surprise them by having it on hand.

Include Trivia

Adding an activity before or after movie night is a great way to get everyone engaged and talking about the film. If you’re watching something everyone has seen, test their knowledge with a quick trivia round beforehand. Watching a new release? See how much everyone was paying attention with some trivia-style questions after it’s over. For super long movies (think The Titanic), pause halfway through for an intermission and get a lightning round going while everyone takes a break.

Take it Outside

During warm summer nights and crisp fall evenings, switch up the scenery by taking movie night outside. Rent or buy a projector, hang up a white backdrop, and hook up some speakers for an evening under the stars. Get everyone to bring their own fold-out chairs while you provide the pillows, blankets, and popcorn.
