Nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, Scottsdale, Arizona blends outdoor adventure with a vibrant local lifestyle. Known for its unique desert landscapes and sunshine, Scottsdale draws audiences from all over the country. It’s the perfect blend of enjoying outdoor adventures and hikes, cozying up at local coffee shops, shopping & fine dining. I have been an Arizona local for over a decade, and Scottsdale is one of my favorite places to explore for all of these reasons and more.
Set just east of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Arizona stretches along the eastern and northern edge of the Valley of the Sun, where the city gradually transitions into the rugged landscapes of the Sonoran Desert and the protected trails of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. While Phoenix serves as the region’s bustling urban center, Scottsdale has developed its own identity rooted in desert scenery, outdoor recreation, and a long-standing connection to the American West. The area was shaped by the 1800s-1900s spirit of frontier travel that defined the Old West era, when mail delivery systems like the legendary Pony Express symbolized the expansion and communication networks of the western United States. Today, that Western heritage still influences Scottsdale’s character—from its historic Old Town district and cowboy culture to the horseback riding trails and open desert landscapes that surround the city.

Best Time of Year to Visit Scottsdale
Thanks to its sunny desert climate in the Sonoran Desert, Scottsdale is a year-round destination, though each season offers a slightly different experience depending on what you want to do outdoors.
- Fall (October–November): One of the best times to visit, with warm daytime temperatures, cool evenings, and perfect conditions for hiking, patio dining, and exploring Old Town.
- Winter (December–February): Mild temperatures and sunny skies make winter peak season in Scottsdale, especially for visitors escaping colder climates. It’s an ideal time for desert hikes, golf, and outdoor dining. I personally LOVE winter in the desert.
- Spring (March–April): Wildflowers can bloom across the desert and the weather is warm but still comfortable, making it another excellent season for hiking and outdoor adventures. This is Scottsdale’s peak season, as it is the season of Spring Break and Spring Training.
- Summer (May–September): Summers are very hot, but early mornings are still great for hiking and outdoor activities. This is also when many resorts offer lower rates, making it a quieter and more budget-friendly time to visit.
Things To Do in Scottsdale
Whether you’re staying for a few days, a week, or you live in Arizona and want to be a tourist in your own state, there is always so much to do in Scottsdale. Truly, there’s something for everyone.
Best Local Hikes
Thanks to its location beside the expansive McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Scottsdale offers some of the best desert hiking in the Phoenix area. Trails wind through classic Sonoran Desert scenery filled with towering saguaro cacti, rugged mountains, and sweeping valley views. Here are a few of the most popular hikes to experience while visiting.
- Tom’s Thumb Trail: Tom’s Thumb is a steady climb through desert terrain that leads to a unique granite rock formation that looks like a big thumb! The landscape here is unique, and especially stands out at sunset. This trail is 4.3 miles round trip and has 1,200 feet of elevation gain.
- Gateway Loop Trail: This is one of the most popular hikes in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, this scenic loop winds through classic Sonoran Desert landscapes dotted with saguaro cacti and mountain views. It’s a great introduction to hiking in Scottsdale- you can make it as long or as short as you want. This trail is 4.5 miles as a full loop and has 650 feet of elevation gain.
- Pinnacle Peak Trail: This well-maintained trail follows the base of Pinnacle Peak and offers beautiful desert scenery. It’s a popular choice for sunrise hikes or a scenic afternoon walk. This trail is 3.5 miles round trip and has 1,000 feet elevation gain, which is a decent challenge.
- Camelback Mountain (Echo Canyon or Cholla Trail): Camelback is a well-known, iconic hike that you can see across the valley. It is known for being difficult, which it is. It has stunning desert views and is definitely worth the hike at least once. Be careful of heat- I suggest hiking early. Depending on which trail, this hike is around 2+ miles round trip and over 1,000 ft in elevation gain.
Best Places to Shop in Scottsdale
Scottsdale is known for its mix of stylish malls, walkable shopping districts, and locally owned boutiques. Whether you’re looking for Southwestern souvenirs, luxury fashion, or trendy lifestyle brands, the city offers several shopping areas that are easy to explore during a visit.
- Old Town Scottsdale: Old Town is one of the most walkable areas in Scottsdale and a great place to browse local boutiques, art galleries, and Southwestern shops. The district is known for its eclectic mix of stores selling Native American jewelry, handmade goods, desert-inspired art, and unique souvenirs. It’s also surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and patios, making it easy to turn shopping into a full afternoon outing.
- Scottsdale Fashion Square: The largest shopping mall in Arizona, Scottsdale Fashion Square features more than 200 retailers and a mix of luxury designer brands, department stores, and popular fashion retailers. The mall also includes a variety of restaurants and entertainment options, making it a popular stop for both shopping and dining in the heart of Scottsdale.
- Kierland Commons: Kierland Commons offers a relaxed open-air shopping experience designed like a walkable “main street.” The center features dozens of specialty retailers and popular brands alongside restaurants and patios, making it a great place to spend an afternoon browsing and dining outdoors. Scottsdale has a vibrant food scene ranging from cozy coffee shops to lively patio restaurants. Whether you’re starting the morning with a latte before a desert hike or winding down with dinner after exploring the city, there are plenty of great spots to eat and drink.
- Fourtillfour Cafe: This minimalist coffee shop is known for its excellent espresso drinks and relaxed outdoor seating. It’s also a gathering spot for car enthusiasts on weekend mornings.

- Light Heart Coffee: Bright and modern with plenty of natural light, Light Heart Coffee is a great place to grab your drink of choice. I recommend the Berry Cobbler Latte. The café has a relaxed atmosphere and a small menu of pastries and light bites.
- Schmooze Eatery: Schmooze is a popular breakfast spot with a large patio, known for hearty brunch dishes, creative breakfast cocktails, and classic comfort food like omelets, pancakes, and breakfast sandwiches. I love the outdoor space with its greenery and fountains.
- Luci’s at the Grove: Luci’s is one of my favorite spots for a meal and/or a coffee. There are a few cute locations in Scottsdale. Luci’s offers coffee, breakfast, and casual lunch options in a relaxed outdoor setting. The property also includes a small market and shaded patio seating.
- Postino WineCafe: Known for its laid-back patio and popular bruschetta boards, Postino is a great spot for lunch or dinner with friends. The restaurant pairs simple, flavorful food with an extensive wine list and a relaxed atmosphere.

Other Activities in and Near Scottsdale
Scottsdale and the surrounding Phoenix area offer a variety of activities beyond hiking and dining, with several great options that are especially family-friendly. Whether you’re looking for something interactive, educational, or just a fun way to spend a few hours, these spots are easy additions to any itinerary.
- OdySea Aquarium: One of the largest aquariums in the Southwest, OdySea is a highly interactive and family-friendly attraction featuring unique exhibits, marine life encounters, and even a rotating aquarium experience that gives you a 360° view of the tanks. PS: the bathrooms off the lobby look into the shark tank!
- Desert Botanical Garden: Located just outside Scottsdale, this beautiful garden showcases the diversity of desert plants with scenic walking trails, seasonal blooms, and educational exhibits. It’s an easy, family-friendly outing that feels both relaxing and interesting.
Phoenix Zoo: A short drive from Scottsdale, the Phoenix Zoo is one of the top-rated zoos in the country, with spacious habitats, shaded paths, and plenty of interactive exhibits—making it a great option for visitors of all ages.
