We all know that disposable coffee cups are super, super unsustainable. Stojo cups make it easier to actually keep a reusable cup on you — and we’re kind of in love with them.
Sixteen billion coffee cups are thrown away each year, and I’m not saying that to be a buzz kill. I’m saying that because the whole world knows about the problem, and yet that number is still really high.
I’m an optimist, I don’t generally believe that people are selfish and don’t care. What I do believe is that convenience trumps all in today’s fast-paced modern world, and sometimes doing the right thing is just one thing too many to do in a day.
And I get that.
The reality is that keeping a reusable coffee cup on you all the time isn’t always practical, and it’s not always easy. Where do you keep it? Your center console? Your purse? And then you have to actually remember to take it out of your car, wash it, and put it back. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I get why people don’t do it — I can barely remember to clean my microwave, let alone keep a coffee cup in my car.
Why Coffee Cup Waste Is Such a Big Freaking Deal
I hate doomsday headlines and negative Nancies as much as the next person, but the reality is simple — unless we start curbing our use of single-use products, the waste problem is never going to go away.
Coffee cups are laminated to be waterproof, which means they’re extra resistant to biodegrading naturally. And a lot of us forget that landfills are actually big pits lined with plastic — nothing really breaks down in a landfill anyway. Add that to the fact that plastic lids take 500+ years to decompose, and Americans throw away a half a billion plastic straws every day, and it’s safe to say: we need a realistic solution.
Why I Love Stojo Collapsible Cups
When keeping a cup in your car is easier said than done, having something compact enough to keep in your purse or briefcase really helps.
I was as guilty as the next person about grabbing a disposable cup at the coffee shop. I have two kids, life is crazy, and most of the time, I’m lucky if I remember my wallet, let alone my thermos.
Stojo makes collapsible silicone coffee cups that are 100% heatproof and game to carry coffee, with flexible silicone straws and heatproof sleeves to boot.
Stojo sent me one of their extra-large collapsible coffee cups to take for a test drive, and I instantly fell in love with it:
We Tried It
My big thing with coffee cups in my car is that I have two cupholders up front — that’s it — and they’re almost always reserved for sippy cups and a bottle of water.
Stojo’s collapsible coffee cup was a practical solution to bringing my cup with me to the coffee shop because it didn’t take up a freaking cupholder, and it really was as simple as that. I washed it, collapsed it down, put it in my center console, and popped it open when I went to go get a coffee.
At first, the silicone thing was a little bit unnerving full of lava-hot coffee. What I’ve found with these cups is that little sleeve makes all of the difference in the world. It not only protects your hand from the heat of the coffee but also distributes your grip more evenly, so that you’re not gripping the cup and squeezing in the walls.
All in all, it’s a keeper, and guess what?
I’m finally the person who remembers to bring her own cup to the coffee shop.
