Plant-Based Beauty with Seed Phytonutrients

Jun. 12, 2019These days, you could say the plant-based and non-toxic beauty industry is, well, blooming. In a space that was once only populated by the most, er… crunchy of options, now keeping your skin and body glowing with nature-based ingredients is easier than ever.

With major retailers like Target, Wal-Mart, and Sephora dedicating portions of stores to greener and cleaner options for skincare and beauty, better-for-you options are becoming less of a luxury item and more widely available to the greater public. This is great news for you, your skin and the planet – and one mission-driven beauty brand making waves in the sustainable space is Seed Phytonutrients.

Established in 2017, with their first batch of products available in 2018, Doylestown Pennsylvania-based Seed Phytonutrients describes themselves as “A young company with old-school values”, and they aim to live up to that claim. With a goal to not just create a sustainable, natural and effective brand to improve the lives of the people who use the products but to in-turn improve and support the small-scale organic farmers they work with, the team behind Seed Phytonutrients takes the idea of “seeds” to new lengths. Along with planting the “seeds” of health and wellbeing within future generations, Seed Phytonutrients harnesses the power of local seed varieties within their products and works to protect them from over-commercialization.

Seeds & Farmers First

Seed Phytonutrients uses the power of seeds – the most concentrated part of a plant and where the plant’s nutrients are often stored – in their products, which range in offerings from hair, to face, to the body. Where most sustainable and eco-focused brands purchase raw ingredients from an open market, Seed works directly with local organic family farms to plant, grow and harvest just for them. And while they could purchase only what they need, Seed goes a step further and puts farmers first by paying for the entire harvest – successful or not – ahead of time. This means that even if a crop fails, an unfortunate factor that can happen to even the most skilled farmer, the farmers are paid for their time and all the hard work that goes into raising the crops. Paying farmers up front for their time and energy isn’t just providing them steady income, it provides the hardworking farmers with the ability to re-invest in their farms. It can take upwards of three years for a farm to be certified organic – a process that is so lengthy and extensive that many farmers throw in the towel and return to conventional practices, pesticides and all – by paying ahead of time, Seed provides stability and the ability to plan for future harvests – so we can all have access to more organic farms for years to come!

Seed also works to protect seed diversity from further corruption. While seeds have been cultivated for millennia, an estimated 94% – ninety-four percent! – of seed varieties have been lost due to factors like factory farming and commercialization of crops. To think that we’re only familiar with approximately 6% of seeds is shocking – and disheartening, but Seed is one company working to bring seeds back. Through a partnership with Hudson Valley Seed Company, each shower-friendly, 100% post-consumer recycled paper bottle of Seed Phytonutrients houses a secret inside: a packet of heirloom variety Hudson Valley Seeds that can be grown in a garden, on your windowsill – or anywhere else you can put a little dirt, some water, and some sun.

Why seeds?

Of course, when you purchase a product from Seed Phytonutrients you’re not just rubbing raw seeds on your face. The seeds are pressed using the cold press and expeller press methods to extract the nutrient-rich oils within – the same methods used to extract your favorite high-quality olive and coconut oils. This extraction process reveals the deep nutrition within the expertly-farmed base ingredients: rich concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytosterols, carotene and vitamins A, C, D and E. With each collection – there’s one for hair, face, and body – utilizing different oils to suit your body’s needs, there’s an oil to support wellbeing all over:

The Hair Collection, which features a variety of shampoos and conditioners for different hair types and needs – Daily, Lightweight, Heavy Duty, Anti-Frizz, Volume and Color Care – utilizes vitamin C and vitamin E-rich ingredients, like coconut, shea butter, turmeric, sunflower seed oil and camelina seed oil to neutralize free radicals and keep hair healthy and strong.

The Face Collection, a hyper-versatile collection of unisex facial care products, includes a cleanser, mask, moisturizer, serum, lotion and ultra-rich cream. Featuring olive oil, mint, safflower seed oil, pure vitamin C, sunflower seed oil and camelina seed oil, this collection is made to nourish and rejuvenate all skin types.

The Body Collection, which includes everything from a moisturizer and oil, to a balm, exfoliating soap and callous balm (perfect for hardworking hands), harnesses jojoba, coconut, safflower, sunflower, and camelina seed oils. Great for all skin types, the body collection is rich in Omega-3’s and vitamin E to support skin’s wellbeing.
