Jun. 13, 2018Around the country people are falling in love with the barre. What started as a simple yet powerful workout has since evolved into barre3 — a powerful fitness program that’s being touted as fantastic for just about anyone, from postpartum moms to the elderly!
I chatted up barre3 Master Trainer Sara Catherine to learn more about how barre3 works and what exactly all the fuss was about.
Meet Sara Catherine, Master Trainer
When Sara Catherine walked into a barre3 studio years ago, she didn’t know what to expect.
“When I first discovered barre3, I was really nervous about it, just intimidated by everyone in their expensive yoga clothes, feeling out of place in my hole-y t-shirt. I thought, I don’t belong here, but they made me feel so welcome, the vibe was great.”
Sara Catherine went in feeling like she didn’t belong and left feeling like she could never stand to leave.
“I loved the class and immediately asked them for a job — what could I do to be a part of this?”
She’s been working with barre3 ever since, climbing the corporate ladder and teaching classes to instructors for a little over four years now. In this article, she spills on what made her fall in love at the barre, and why people can’t get enough of barre3.
What Exactly is Barre?
Barre is an exercise craze that the internet can’t shut up about right now. Inspired by ballet, it’s done barefoot at a ballet barre and has a focus on balance and stability. Holding poses and executing tiny movements that burn baby burn, this workout is deceptively challenging.
Less Intimidation, More Inclusion: Meet barre3
Barre3 is a whole different kind of barre. While still including those basic principles of the original exercises, barre3 incorporates elements of pilates that get your heart pumping and make you sweat.
“It’s all movements you’ve seen before, but it’s the experience and message that makes it so profound and infectious,” says Sara.
Barre3 is more than just an exercise program though — it’s movement with a message: Everybody matters.
In these studios, you’ll find a sense of inclusion you may not be used to experiencing in an exercise class. The staff is literally trained to make you feel welcome, so don’t be shy — kick off your shoes, put on your sports bra, and go sweat it out.
The barre3 Difference
The barre3 Studio
During our interview, I asked Sara Catherine about what visitors to the studio could expect to find.
Most studios are equipped with on-site childcare, where moms can drop their kids off and get some time to themselves without having to coordinate with a spouse’s schedule. Your self-care, on your time.
The floors of the studios are made with natural cork, a sustainable and naturally antibacterial material. Barre3 is typically done barefoot, but Sara Catherine says a significant portion of participants choose to wear socks, or the grippy socks with exposed toes that are sold in their studios. If you’re foot shy, don’t be shy — you’re in good company.
Workouts That Meet You Where You Are
For many, the most appealing part of barre3 is that these workouts, while challenging, are designed specifically to meet you where you are. Every exercise can be customized to any physical level, and the instructors frequently work with pregnant and postpartum women as well as the elderly.
“I wanna be a fierce old lady, and I feel like this is the workout that gives me strength and endurance right now, but will also give me longevity for the years to come.”
Barre3 is safe, accessible, sustainable movement that’s gentle on joints with no aggressive movements like jumping. Many participants come in post injury or surgery to regain their physical fitness, and the staff frequently updates their exercises based on the latest recommendations from physical therapists.
Exercise That Revitalizes
If you’re feeling beat up by your workouts, it’s time to give barre3 a try. This is an exercise program that’s designed to help you overcome fitness challenges, but more than anything, to do so sustainably.
There’s also an interesting mental component to barre3 you won’t find anywhere else — it teaches you to be present in the moment and hyper-aware of your body, a kind of gratitude for your muscles and all they do for you that gives you something to focus on besides the burn.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people about how this workout makes them feel, and they all say they leave feeling energized, not destroyed.”
Barre3 is an exercise that’s physically challenging, but not physically depleting. It strengthens and tones and pushes you, but it also finds you where you are on your fitness journey — it doesn’t yell over its shoulder for you to catch up.
At the end of each workout is guided breathwork, during which you center and check in with your body. You’re never left in the dust, and you’re never made to feel like you can’t keep going. Barre3 leaves no one behind.
