Clean & Conscious Skincare with Cocokind

Mar. 1, 2019In the past 15 years, the idea of “clean” skincare and makeup has come a long way. Leaps and bounds from the sad, back-corner displays you once found in your local natural foods store a decade or more ago, now we have entire retailers devoted to delivering clean beauty and skincare in all its forms – for better or worse. Unfortunately, like most good things, as the concept of clean beauty has developed wider recognition and attracted a broader audience, the label “clean” has been co-opted by brands looking to make a few bucks off a “trend”.

It’s a catch-22 for those interested in better-for-you skincare: With more choices than ever before, we’re now forced to wade through empty claims and misleading labels to find the real ones. The brands that truly walk the walk as much as they talk the talk (or showcase the label, as the case may be). One particular skincare brand that puts their money where their mouth is? Cocokind.

“Clean & Conscious” Skincare with Cocokind

Launched in 2014 by founder and CEO (and former Wall Street investment banker), Priscilla Tsai, Cocokind was created with women in mind. A hormonal acne sufferer herself, Tsai began her journey to Cocokind first as a consumer, in a situation all too familiar to many of us: when she wasn’t satisfied with the efficacy of the prescription treatments prescribed to her, she looked towards nature for some answers.

And as it often does, nature provided. After experimenting with and experiencing success with all-natural products on her skin (coconut oil included), Tsai made the leap from New York to San Francisco, and from Wall Street to skincare. The results of which you’ve likely seen on the shelves of Whole Foods, on Thrive Market, in Bed Bath & Beyond, carried by Free People – and more. Cocokind is everywhere these days, adorning the feeds of influencers and bloggers, and carried in the bags of everyday, hard-working women – and for good reason. Not only are the products gorgeous, natural, and really, truly, clean – they’re also effective.

But it’s not just the products that are making a difference with their natural ingredients and clear results – Cocokind also works to empower women through their 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Impact Foundation. The Cocokind Impact Foundation aims to empower women by providing “financial grants to female entrepreneurs in health, wellness, and sustainability industries who are focused on creating social impact through business.”

Every women awarded a grant is matched with an Impact Mentor, a person in business with a track record of success within the health and wellness industries. Past Impact Mentors include Elizabeth Stein, founder of Purely Elizabeth, Jason Wachob, founder of mindbodygreen, and Julie Nguyen, CEO and Co-Founder of Methodology. “Clean & Conscious” – that’s the tagline emblazoned across the Cocokind site, and it’s clear that Tsai and her entire company mean it.

Oh hi, it’s still us🙋🏻‍♀️. In the six month period before launching cocokind, I remember drafting up packaging designs at Starbucks by myself. I had never done that before but I was so excited for what our brand would stand for. I created packaging that reflected my vision and my personality, and a few keywords I had chosen for our values: clean, conscious, and accessible. I had no idea what I was doing but I was having the time of my life trying. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward four years, we knew it was time to upgrade our packaging. The brand isn’t just me anymore; it has to reflect the character traits that bond all of us who love and use cocokind. We wanted our packaging to be less grocery, more beauty and more color. We didn’t want it to be too busy, but we also didn’t want it to be too minimalist with no personality either. It had to balance being the “grown up” cocokind 2.0 with staying fun, always kind, and timeless. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our mission is to create clean and conscious skincare for all — and we hope to reach even more people with our new packaging. Thank you so much for your support throughout the years. Look at all we have built together! It’s shocking in the best way possible, and I’m so glad I’m not sitting alone at Starbucks anymore dreaming of this one day.
